Today is 19 June 2000

24 June will be our next dinner meeting at the YMCA Lake Property. We will be having a chicken dinner catered. The cost will be an extremely reasonable $10 per person.
As always year you are invited to come by boat and stay the night however there are no shore power or water hookups so top off the water tanks and tune up the genny.

The Chattanooga Power Squadron has suffered a great loss. P/R/C Norman Willis Hatker, N passed away in May after sucumbing to an illness mostly unknown to him until March of this year.
In 1972 Norm was the first Commander and a chartering member of the Chattanooga Squadron. His work in starting a local USPS Squadron brought him in contact with the National USPS and soon he was on the Exhibits Committee, which handles the teaching aids shown at the Annual meeting. He was then asked to write a manual on compass adjusting. (Norm was one of only 300 or so compass adjusters in the US Navy during WW 2) He was then asked to write the chapter on Inland boating for the Boating Course, and became the Chairman of the National Committee that edited all Power Squadron Teaching manuals. (His only comment was "can you believe it?")
Eventually he was elected a Rear Commander, Chairman of the editorial development committee. Such was the life of Norman Willis Hatker. His devotion to whatever interested him in becoming the best and doing and outstanding job at whatever he was involved in was legendary.
Norm wrote and published a wonderful book on his life between March and May of this year. It brings tears and laughter to me and I would be happy to share it with any one who wishes.
To Norm:
We will sincerely miss you old friend, you added so much good will and humor to our lives, and it was wonderful the way you touched us and will continue to touch us with your spirit. We are all richer in our lives for just having known you!

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
UPDATE

Sail Course was successfully completed in early May by Joann Green, Molly and Lloyd Cox, Debbie and Ed Buck. Congratulations to each of them for a job well done.

The Seamanship Course final exam is scheduled for May 30. Four members will take the exam - Jim Buyer, Rachel and Bob Hay, and Kaki Thornton. I have every reason to believe they will be successful.

The Piloting Course will start on June 6. One out of three members of Chattanooga Power Squadron have not completed Piloting. If you are one of those, by the time you read this article, I will have called you to enroll you in the course. The Piloting Course will run through August; then a short break and Advanced Piloting will begin by the end of September. The JN Course is moving right along progressing at a rate of one chapter per week. However, there are still several difficult chapters to cover, and there are still sextant sights to be taken. A word of encouragement to the students who are facing this task, Remember, the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.

Meanwhile, a second Boat Smart Course is being scheduled to begin in June at the Privateer Yacht Club, and is open to the public. Please plan to volunteer your help in proctoring the course. A third Boat Smart Course will be given in the Fall, as is our custom.

My offer stands, to provide you with student materials for any USPS course you would like to take. I will also arrange for a qualified tutor to help you through any difficult parts of the course material. Just let me know what course you want to study.

Yours for smarter boating,
P/D/C John P. Cook, N
